As a rural community surrounded by the forest, Kanaka Bar faces the risk of wildfires. The link to the map below shows the historical fires in our area since recording of burns started.
As climate change see “less water” in our territory and greater heat, the risk of a wildfire is increasing. The treated area maps under the Forest Fires tab to the right show locations where Kanaka Bar, as a community, is pruning, thinning and burning (in the winter months) to reduce the summer threat to our homes and our members from the risk of wildfires.
In the summer, we brush and chip up materials so we can work year round to protect our people, our property and our animals.
